Antifascist actions have been held in numerous Greek cities ever since the massive police crackdown against immigrants/refugees started, in early August, and especially after a man was stabbed to death by apparent nationalists in the centre of Athens (12/8).
On Tuesday, August 21st, at midday, nearly 150 comrades took to central streets of Athens, in the areas of Omonia, Monastiraki and Thissio, to demonstrate against state/fascist terrorism.
This street intervention was a minimum first response to the murderous attacks and pogroms against immigrants. Starting from Monastiraki, antifascists carried out flyposting, distributed multilingual texts to passersby and marched through Athinas, Sophocleous, Sapphous, Sarri, Asomaton and Adrianou streets.
Comrades protested exactly where, in the dawn of August 12th, fascist thugs murdered an immigrant after they attempted to attack two others. They intervened with anarchist discourse in downtown neighborhoods, where many immigrants and refugees live, work and go out despite the fact that ID controls and arrests are still frequent throughout the day.
The multilingual poster (pasted widely by the comrades) reads:
On Sunday the 12th of August, 5 fascists, riding on motorbikes, stabbed to death a young immigrant in Anaxagora Street, in the occupied-by-the-police centre of Athens. Shortly before, they had tried to stab two other immigrants. The police and the minister knew from the first moment that this was a racist murder; nevertheless, neither the victim’s name was ever announced, nor the killers were found. And how to do so, when most cops are like-minded with the fascist murderers of the “golden dawn”? Half of them have voted for this party in the last national elections anyway.
We live in the days and nights of knives. Only in the past six months, 500 attacks by fascists took place against immigrants, mostly workers. We live in times that remind the Nazi pogroms. Since the 2nd of August more than 8,000 transfers into the Aliens Police Directorate on Petrou Ralli Street and 1,600 arrests of immigrants were made as a result of the huge police operation “Xenios Zeus”.
We believe that all people should live in dignity, solidarity and equality, regardless of their country of origin, skin color, religion and sex, regardless of whether they have papers or not. We believe that fascist/racist attacks and murders should not be left unanswered.
We must fight together as “natives” and immigrants against racism, nationalism, fascism and totalitarianism of any kind, as part of the struggle against State and Capital. We must fight for a world without oppression and exploitation, without borders and bosses.
