HANDS OFF THE LELAS KARAGIANNI 37 SQUAT (ATHENS)
In a period of intensification of social and class antagonism due to the generalized attack of state and capital on even the most elementary interests and rights of the workers the unemployed and the youth, and during the attempt to raise social and political defenses, repression is intensified by targeting, threatening and attacking people in struggle and spaces of struggle.
On the night of July 8th at 2 a.m., only a few hours before the general strike demonstration some heavy police units surrounded without any obvious pretext the occupied building of 37, Lelas Karagianni Street in the Athens neighbourhood of Kipseli – and blocked off the surrounding streets. The Occupation was put under a condition of siege, threatened for many hours with a police raid, while an order had been issued for the arrest of anyone who would attempt to exit or enter the occupied building. Police checked and even detained many passers-by, neighbours or others who just happened to be in the streets around the occupation.
Finally the tight siege ended with the withdrawal of the police forces at 5 a.m., as suddenly as it had started.
Regardless of the undeclared targets and planning of this police operation, the fact is that yet another space of struggle and yet another group of people in struggle was targeted by state repression and terrorism. An occupation which during its entire 22 years always stood steadily within the ranks of the wider anarchist/anti-authoritarian struggle and always on the side of all the social-class struggles of the exploited and repressed people.
For this reason the night-time repressive operation of July 8th against this particular occupation had some wider targets and comprises part of the wider state repression aiming at terrorizing and attacking anti-authoritarian struggle and more widely, the social struggles of our time.
And even if this particular repressive operation folded it nevertheless showed the aggressive tendencies and the terrorizing methods employed by the state against the self-organized nuclei of struggle, such as occupations, which during this period are particularly important and useful in their support and contribution to the development of collective resistances, both on a more central level as much as in the neighbourhoods of the city.
It is for this reason that despite the very late time [at which the attack against the occupation was launched] there was an enormous struggle interest and tens of comrades were mobilized, expressing their solidarity availability to the besieged occupation on the night of July 8th.

In un periodo di intensificazione dell’antagonismo sociale e edi classe, dovuto all’attacco generalizzato dello stato e del capitale ai diritti e agli interessi più elementari dei lavoratori, dei disoccupati e dei giovani, e durante il tentativo di incrementare le difese politiche, la repressione si intensifica nel individuare, vessare e attaccare gli individui in lotta e gli spazi di lotta.
Nella notte dell’8 luglio alle 2.00 del mattino, solo poche ore prima della manifestazione per lo sciopero generale , qualche unità di polizia antisommossa ha circondato, senza alcun pretesto, l’edificio di odos Lela Karagiannis 37, nel quartiere ateniese di Kipseli –e bloccato le strade limitrofe. L’occupazione è stata posta sotto assedio, vessata per molte ore dal raid poliziesco, mentre era stato dato l’ordine di arrestare chiunque avesse tentato di uscire dal, o entrare nell’edificio occupato. La polizia ha controllato, e anche trattenuto, diversi passanti –del quartiere o altri che semplicemente passavano per le strade intorno all’occupazione in quel momento.
Alla fine lo stretto assedio è finito con il ritiro delle forze di polizia alle 5.00, improvvisamente com’era cominciato.
A parte i target non dichiarati e la pianificazione di quest’operazione di polizia, il fatto è che ancora un altro luogo di lotta e ancora un altro gruppo di persone in lotta è stato messo nel mirino della repressione e del terrorismo statale. Un’occupazione che nell’interezza dei suoi 22 anni è sempre rimasta stabile nelle file delle più ampie lotte anarchiche e antiautoritarie, e sempre dalla parte di tutte le lotte sociali e di classe della gente sfruttata e repressa.
Per questo motivo l’operazione repressiva notturna dell’8 luglio, contro quest’occupazione in particolare, ha in realtà dei target più ampi e si inscrive nella più vasta repressione dello stato , finalizzata a terrorizzare e attaccare la lotta antiautoritaria e , in modo più esteso, la lotta sociale del nostro tempo.
Anche se quest’operazione repressiva nello specifico si è conclusa, ciononostante ha dimostrato le tendenze aggressive e i metodi terroristici usati dallo stato contro i nuclei di lotta aut organizzati, come le occupazioni, che sono estremamente importanti e utili in questo periodo , per il loro supporto ed il loro contributo allo sviluppo delle resistenze collettive, sia a livello del centro, sia nei sobborghi della città.
È per questa ragione che, a dispetto dell’ora tarda (nella quale è stato lanciato l’attacco contro l’occupazione), c’è stata un’enorme allerta di lotta e decine di compagni si sono mobilizzati, esprimendo la loro solidale disponibilità all’occupazione assediata nella notte dell’8 luglio.
