Italy: The attorney of Turin appealed the sentence in the trial against Silvia, Billy and Costa

The state attorney of Turin, represented by Arnaldi Di Balme, was not pleased with the sentence of nonsuit due to the “ne bis in idem”, that because of lack of jurisdiction the case was not allowed to proceed. Now they are getting back on track appealing against all the jurisprudence and asking for a new process. Once again the persecutor is insisting on claiming that the transport of explosive material and the attempted attack to target IBM in Switzerland was planned in Italy.

The attorney is trying to proof this based upon the participation of Silvia, Billy and Costa in the Coalizione contro le nocivitá / Coalition against nocivity (toxicity/harmfulness). An experience of struggle against harmfulness that during its active years has created an active projectuality against bio- and nanotechnologies.

These attempts of repression should come as no surprise; the law is built specifically to repress critical and struggling environments that go against this exploitive system.

For us it remains clear that it is a necessity to get rid of this ecocidal system that uses science and research as their executive branch.

For those who would like to deepen their understanding we suggest the reading of the publication “Solidarity and Complicity – A collection of texts around the attempted sabotage of the IBM nanotech labs in Switzerland and on the expression of solidarity when the repression got the upper hand” (at the moment only in Italian).

Bern, Switzerland: Direct action against research on GMOs in solidarity with Billy, Silvia and Costa

On February 25th just passed, a branch of the Federal Department for the Environment in Bern was attacked with paint.

From February 22nd until 28th, a callout was made for an international week of action against technological nuisances and the world that produces them. It’s in this context that, on February 25th, we went and poured out a massive amount of paint on the walls of the Federal Office for the Environment in Bern.

For several years this Office issues the permissions to conduct research on genetically modified (GM) plants in the open-air “Protected Site” laboratory, in Reckenholz, Zurich. At this very moment a new request, concerning “Gala” apple trees, is being processed.

This attack against research and development of GMOs was carried out in solidarity with everyone in struggle against industrial society.

UK: “Smarter Prison? – call for war on the technology multinationals” publication from Return Fire

Submitted to Return Fire in the last month of 2015, as part of the challenge to create diverse Black December activities. Return Fire take full responsibility for delaying publication while we awaited corrections, which we now amended into the text and formated for release. Big love from our trench to the comrades standing proud in the Turin courts around this very time. Shouts to the fighters who carry on beyond the Black December timeframe and harry the dominators in all corners of our lives. Freedom. R.F.

– solidarity with Silvia, Costa & Billy

August 2015: anonymous arson damages to the nano-technology research centre of the Université Catholique in Louvain, Belgium

Note from Return Fire: We transcribed the following essay, submitted by ‘Radical Interference’, which unfortunately cannot fit into our upcoming Volume 3 (Winter 2015-2016). We are happy to see that the invitation from the Greek dungeons for a Black December campaign (to re-intensify our insurrectionary fervour while not forgetting to exchange experiences and rationales around various topics of struggle) was taken up in this form, so as to broaden and develop the offensive against modern domination. Solidarity and strength to Silvia, Costa, Billy, Marco, Adrián, Nicola and Alfredo, and to the rest of the comrades in our struggle. In the spirit of ‘Avalon’; always present in our memories and active hands. Let’s extend the energy of Black December beyond the New Year, through the trial that starts in January and the proposed week of mobilisation, and onwards on the path of total liberation. Winter Solstice, 2015

At this time, as the wheels of this monstrous society continue to grind on, and the scattered insurgents make to throw what they can beneath the tracks to slow it down in whatever way, we are left with some questions. These are questions that, in our opinion, deserve more thought and provocation than they usually assume in the circles of anarchists, rebels and land-defenders. Namely; it is clear that mobilisations (independent of any timeframe), such as those for our imprisoned or fallen, are a practical necessity in order to constitute diverse forces that are ready to face and understand the consequences of any struggle that materially contests the ruling order; in other words, so that repression lessens in its power to stop us in our own tracks.

However, before the usual propaganda and agitation that takes aim at agents or facades of the state, at the prison-industrial complex and its readily-identifiable mercenaries, the bigger question is: what exactly is captivity, today? What is domination, in its most contemporary sense? What facilitates these abominable things, which naturally our passions are also fully inclined to assault?

Scratch the surface of everyday life in the (especially Northern-)European metropolis and the territories that feed them, and the material gears that form that ‘Great Cage’ can still be plainly seen if you know where to look; CCTV cameras being only the tip of the technological iceberg. But already, works are underway to make the chains that bind us less immediately perceivable; yet all the more comprehensive.

In this essay, we will be speaking about a project, a threat, that, it must be remembered, has not yet come to pass in its depicted scope. This carries not a few problems; the techno-critical sphere is already frequently wracked by morbid fascination with the most fantastic projections from the mouthpieces of those developers of domination. A potential fault of this over-activity of the imagination is a kind of self-paralysis, and the needless spread of debilitating fear among those with whom we are reaching for through our publications and communiques. Basically, falling for the hype of techno-science, and acting as if the worst were already here, we terrorise ourselves and those who would like to act – often at the expense of adequately assessing the technologies that are already with us, and studying their flaws and openings for disabling. This detrimental habit is augmented by a deleterious hostility towards the critiques of technological-industrial society, that is still sadly shown by many sectors of the more-or-less radical oppositional tendencies of the world.

With this in mind, throughout what follows, the strongest impression we would like to impart would be – cracks still exist in the walls that surround us, and will continue to…. if we seek them out and force them open. As the glut of action from all across the world in this month alone shows, and from a wealth of perspectives and targeting, the attack is not only feasible, but ever-present. The reason we find it important to dedicate this amount of words to the topic in hand is, simply, that these spaces for insurrection and creation are however diminishing, and it is (understandable fear of) the technological apparatus of modernity and its powers of surveillance, regulation and investigation that is largely responsible. In fact, history regularly teaches us that once designed and perfected, it is usually a matter of time before any given innovation in the hands of the ruling order is deployed to its full and repressive potential; to the degree that the rulers can afford and believe they can get away with. The question is when, not if. Continue reading UK: “Smarter Prison? – call for war on the technology multinationals” publication from Return Fire

Italy: Billy, Costa and Silvia sent to trial again

On July 17th 2015, the preliminary hearing against Silvia Guerini, Costantino ‘Costa’ Ragusa and Luca ‘Billy’ Bernasconi took place in Turin, Italy. The three have been previously arrested and jailed for several years in Switzerland, accused of having organised an act of sabotage against a nanotechnology research centre of IBM, under construction at the time. On April 15th 2010, they were stopped and arrested by Swiss police who searched their car and found explosives, as well as leaflets claiming the imminent action under the name ‘Earth Liberation Front Switzerland’.

They have now been indicted according to the article 110 of the Italian penal code, which is used to punish offenses of criminal association. Particularly they’re accused of having conspired together to plan the action in Italy, of having illegally obtained the materials needed to assemble and prepare explosive devices, and of having smuggled such devices between the Italian and Swiss border. All charges include the aggravating circumstance of the ‘purpose of terrorism’, historically used in political trials in Italy to obtain long pretrial detention, and longer prison sentence if found guilty.

The judge at the preliminary hearing accepted the thesis proposed by the deputy prosecutor Enrico Arnaldi Di Balme and found irrelevant that Billy, Costa and Silvia have already been tried and convicted in the Swiss Confederation.

The trial will commence on January 13th 2016 in Turin. Let’s use it as an occasion to relaunch the struggle against environmental destruction.

In view of the trial, the three comrades are facing a hard time and need to cover several legal expenses, so they’ve shared a call for support. Any help is much appreciated. Switzerland: Comrade Silvia Guerini released from prison!

According to Informa-azione, in the morning of July 4th, 2012, Silvia was released in Chiasso, at the border with Italy. Together with relatives, she headed back home. According to Silvia Billy Costa Liberi, she stepped out of prison without restrictions, after a reduction to 1/3 of her sentence was accepted.

Short background
On April 15th, 2010, Costantino “Costa” Ragusa, Silvia Guerini and Luca “Billy” Bernasconi were stopped by a police blockade and arrested near Zurich. According to initial Press reports, while the car (rented in Italy) was being searched, the Swiss cops declared to have found explosives, a detonator and a statement in reference to the IBM laboratories, which do research on nanotechnology. Costa, Silvia (both from Italy) and Billy (from Switzerland) are fellow anarchists who have been active in fighting for radical ecology, animal liberation, against health hazards such as nuclear technology, and supporting and standing in solidarity with revolutionary prisoners. They have never concealed their hostility against those who are everyday exploiting, poisoning and terrorizing by means of Power—which are in the hands of a few people—like the new technologies (nanotechnology, biotechnology, cybernetics, etc.). Since their arrest, Silvia, Billy and Costa were remanded in custody in Swiss prisons, maintaining a combative stance in the cells of democracy, conducting hunger strikes, and so forth. In July 2011, during their trial week in Bellinzona, Switzerland, the comrades were held in solitary confinement in Lugano prisons with additional restrictions, until they received prison sentences. Billy was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months, Costa to 3 years and 8 months, and Silvia to 3 years and 4 months, charged with preparatory acts of arson and illegal transport and concealment of explosive materials. Switzerland: Communiqué by ecoanarchist prisoner Luca ‘Billy’ Bernasconi about his participation in prison protests against the World Economic Forum (WEF)

Prison separates us physically from the struggles. It isolates us from our loved ones and from the daily complicity of our paths of struggle, denying us our own desires. However it doesn’t manage to take them away from our head, nor the fight from our spirit. On the contrary, the rage and hate we feel against these walls and our jailers roots them further on into our soul, into our flesh.

The thought becomes even more impelling than on the outside: ‘what can I do?’ Therefore, when opportunities to take part in outside mobilizations from the inside of these walls arise, it’s lived as something much more than symbolic. It’s a moment I seize and make fundamentally mine, deep inside where no guard, no cop, no one else whose intention is to abuse their power, should ever be allowed to lay neither hand nor eye. There, inside us, where nothing is symbolic but everything is tension.

Leaders of different sorts of dominion (politicians and contractors, of the media and spiritual means) will meet this year at the World Economic Forum in Davos. There they will confront each other with various subjects in order to trace new models that will anchor even deeper their own privileges and allow them to get richer. Among those subjects, one that stands out is the one relative to ‘the new technological social models’ and, more precisely, ‘to the next wave of technological innovations, especially in the sciences of life, in nanotechnology, in the artificial intelligence’.

It is well known that times of crisis are very propitious periods for the elite in power to force passages that previously were impracticable, thereby introducing changes that allow the system to consolidate even better its power over everyone’s life. Crises are, in fact, what the system needs to renovate in itself and the world around it.

These days, a problem that they make us perceive with exhausting continuity is not much about the climate change (that for some is a deception, while big companies, despite putting on a greener dress, don’t care more about the planet than considering it an instrument to exploit in order to secure their business) but rather about the necessity of finding innovations in order to perpetuate this shitty society; by eliminating or delaying its most visible negative aspects such as ecological unbalances with its consequences in the changing of the climate, or the proliferation of diseases that stigmatize our health.

A turning point has thus arrived for them, in which they come up with an act of renewal that will guarantee the perpetuation of the current system of exploitation besides the imbalances and iniquities that have been accumulated all these years, especially since the latter postwar. The goal is not to solve them, because to really solve the unbalances produced, it would be necessary to question the system itself in its basic operation. In a much more simple and cunning manner they jump with both feet over it, transferring the production of harmfulness to new, more complicated and submerged levels that cannot as easily be connected directly to the system we depend on and its fundamental dynamics of production.

In this sense, nanotechnologies and biotechnologies have several very promising aspects, and the same goes for every aspect or productive sector of the techno-industrial system we live in. They’ll talk about them in Davos because at WEF ‘big’ industrialists and worldwide contractors can meet ‘big’ scientists and hi-tech pioneers from whom they get inspired, then later share a drink with some ‘big’ sponsors in order to convince them to invest and subsequently chat with some governmental authority (or nongovernmental, the roles often get blurred) in order to illustrate to them the goodness of the coming developments and researches. The moment in Davos is a privileged one. This is where the owners of this world and their accomplices (scientists and media) get inspired towards new shared (between them) strategies for their enrichment, the defense of their privileges and of their domination, naturally confirming the tendency of the last years to a sense of social and environmental responsibility (a façade).

Actually, concerning nanotechnologies, one of the key issues during the sessions in Davos will regard exactly how to ‘understand every single danger before unpredictable consequences will impact the public support for nanoscientific research in a negative way’.

It’s clear, isn’t it? Their concern is not the harmfulness that they enclose, but for people to keep on believing their promotion as a miracle of science; and to not even cross people’s minds to refuse them, as already happened (and continues to happen) with biotechnologies in the dietary field, since their development could be determining for the renovation of the system in act, and give it a more respectable facade, which, consequently, would make it more dominant. And this happens thanks to this crisis.

In order to participate in the outside struggles from within, during the WEF week, from 20th till 29th of January, I will abstain from prison food and work, which is compulsory here. This refusal is also intended to be an answer to Silvia’s recent isolation in the psychiatric section of the women’s prison in Hindelbank, as well as to the decision of the prison authorities not to grant visits of friends and comrades without a dividing glass, and in support of Marco Camenisch, whose hearing concerning the decision regarding his release on parole will take place in the next months (May 2012).

I take the opportunity to return hugs of complicity and solidarity to the comrades detained in Greece, Chile (forza Tortuga!), Mexico, Russia, Belarus, Germany, Spain, the US, UK and anywhere in the world; to the comrades of Fuoriluogo in Bologna on trial, to the people from Florence and to the antifascists from Cuneo, to the rebels arrested or charged in Val di Susa (Susa Valley) and to everyone fighting inside and outside infamous walls.

Switzerland: Communiqué by ecoanarchist prisoner Silvia Guerini about her hunger strike from 20th to 29th of January 2012

Nanotechnologies are going to be one of the discussion points of the World Economic Forum (WEF). This is exemplary of how, along with biotechnologies, they are something more than a simple technological development. They represent a strategic and fundamental choice for the survival of this techno-industrial system; they are the bricks with which the system will rebuild itself in every sector.

‘Control the oil and you will control the nations, control the food and you will control the populations.’ (Kissinger, 1970)

Control on basic food supplies, on resources, on rare and raw materials, to hold entire populations in check, but mostly to expand and develop a techno-industrial system. The project to achieve the strategic aim of control over the global food security started in the USA in the 30s with the creation of the corporation field of agribusiness. An empire which financed the ‘Green Revolution’, the oil and chemical corporations monopolized the field of the patents, of the seeds; they imposed and introduced the genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the southern countries. These corporations reorganized themselves as ‘life science’ businesses, at the same time as sterile GMO seeds left their laboratories. Switzerland: Marco Camenisch, Silvia and Billy on hunger strike against the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos

This is a flyer (in Italian) that was distributed during the demo against the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Bern on January 21st, 2012.

Comrades from Villa Vegan Squat in Milan, Italy, are translating the communiqués of Marco, Silvia and Billy about the strike, so they will be available soon.

The three green anarchists imprisoned in Swiss prisons decided to join the week of mobilization against the World Economic Forum, which will be held in Switzerland during these days. Marco and Silvia are conducting a hunger strike for 10 days (January 20th–30th, 2012). Billy is abstaining from prison food and refusing to work (working is compulsory in Swiss prisons), in order to protest against the WEF, but also as a response to their prison conditions, more precisely for the liberation of Marco Camenisch in May 2012 and against the glass separator during the visits of friends.

Marco Camenisch was incarcerated in Switzerland in 1991. He’s always been active in green anarchist struggles. Silvia and Billy were arrested, along with Costa, in April 2010 in Zurich for having attempted to attack the construction site of a new nanotechnology research center of IBM with explosives.

We’re not surprised by the fact that this year in the schedule of WEF they will also deal with nanotechnologies, because, as with all the technological systems and even more the new technologies (nanotechnologies, biotechnologies and cybernetics), they are not neutral but subjected to the ones who manage economics, and a further tool in the hands of those who hold power.

While the government leaders and corporations’ bosses meet with each other to impose the new world economic developments, inside the labs experts and researchers study to create new means with which to increase social control, strengthen the soldiers, try to make our lives even more artificial and automatized, till the point of manipulating the living; manipulations that provoke devastating and irreversible effects in the earth equilibriums and on human and non human animals.

We will always fight against those who are turning the earth into a land of plastic and concrete, commodities and technologies, industries and offices: a world devoid of life.

Against the State and Capital which, with their dominating and exploitative logics want human beings to be slaves, the animals to be merchandise and the planet to be an infinite source of things to sack.

The WEF occasion cannot but increase our rage and desire to keep on struggling, inside and outside prisons.

Solidarity with the prisoners on hunger strike!
