Istanbul, Turkey: From the day of Berkin Elvan’s funeral

Berkin Elvan, who sustained severe head injury from a gas canister in June 2013, died on March 11th, 2014. The boy’s funeral was held on March 12th in the Feriköy cemetery in Istanbul’s Şişli district. Berkin had only turned 15 while still in coma.

The police attacked the massive crowd that demonstrated in Şişli for Berkin’s funeral.

During post-funeral resistance in the neighbourhoods of Pangaltı and Kurtuluş, banks were also destroyed and the ruling AKP election office was wrecked and set on fire.

On same night in Greece, people gathered in remembrance of Berkin in Athens, at the Exarchia’s location where 15-year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos was shot dead in December 2008; a slogan on the street reads:

Berkin Elvan, 15-year-old dead
