Among the Greek population the anger is growing: demonstrations, strikes, occupations. Since the announcement of the austerity measures by the Greek government and the EU, thousands of people took to the streets for the umpteenth time in order to make their displeasure known.
In contrast to the protests in 2008 that addressed the murder of 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos, now the expansion of financial and state crisis is clearly visible. Now the main bulk of participants in the protests no longer consists only of the precarious and low-income population groups of Greece, but extends to all social strata. In Athens and Thessaloniki alone, about 20,000 people protested in the course of the 24hour general strike on May 11th this year against the intended increase in work hours, laid down by the government’s austerity measures. Three weeks later, nearly 500,000 people gathered in the centre of Athens to defend themselves against cuts in salaries and pensions.
The ‘crisis’ is not caused by individual States, because it is a cyclically emerging integral part of capitalism. . . .
