First announcement from the occupied rectorate at Propylaea in Athens

During the May 11th general strike demonstration, thousands of protesters voiced their opposition to the Greek government’s anti-social measures which directly effect the workers. While the predatory policy of the ‘Troika’ along with the cooperating Greek government is pushing ever large sections of the society toward absolute poverty and destitution, the riot police forces attack demonstrators viciously.

At the demonstration of May 11th, while a big part of the protesters had passed by the parliament and were heading back toward Propylaea (Panepistimiou Str.), the cops attacked furiously and without provocation a number of demonstrator blocks (neighbourhood assemblies, rank-and-file labour unions, anarchists/anti-authoritarians, extra-parliamentary left) beating them to the ground and firing tons of tear gas against them. More than 100 demonstrators were hospitalized (in the Nikaia, ‘KAT’ and ‘Evangelismos’ general hospitals), while three of them underwent surgery.

Comrade Yannis K. was attacked in a murderous way by the forces of repression. Wounded, and with his head bleeding, he began to move away from Panepistimiou Street aided by another demonstrator. Walking down Amerikis Street, at the junction with Stadiou Street, they entered into a porch where those present saw him bleeding. He was then transferred to the General Hospital of Nikaia in an antemortem (pre-death) situation – according to the medical report issued later – suffering as he was from internal head bleeding. He was operated immediately and has been hospitalized in the intensive care clinic in a coma since.

While this text is been written the formal mechanisms of manipulation along with their regimes’ apologists are trying intensively to present the murderous attack as an ‘injury under unclear circumstances’ relieving thereby the moral and physical perpetrators of the attack (the Greek State, forces of oppression –that is, attempting to absolve them from any wrongdoing).

The memory of the December’s [2008] revolt is swinging like an axe over the heads of the rulers that shake in face of the possibility of a new social explosion. Alongside the forces of repression and in close cooperation with them, members of extreme-right organizations have launched a coordinated pogrom against political milieus and squats (Villa Amalias, Patission 61 & Skaramaga squat), attempting thereby to disrupt the ‘enemy within’ by sending messages of terror and fear to anyone who dares to fight.

Today, May 12th, at 9 o’clock, we occupied the rectorate of the University of Athens in Propylaea (Panepistiniou Str.), in the centre of Athens. We have already turned the building and its courtyard into a counter-information centre and a struggle front, as an embankment to the States’ attack and capitalist brutality.
