This was good news, but let us not trust the Greek authorities…
On March 10th, the Minister of Public Order stated that the government never agreed in a reduction of the time to give a residence permit from 12 to 8 years! He bluntly stated that the hunger strikers gave in and not the government. He was quite provocative in his statements, at least as reported by the Greek media.
Furthermore, as the Minister of Interior, Ragousis, answered to the far-right-wing party in the parliament session of March 9th:
“Legalization is not the case here, because shortly the immigrants will not appeal to the Ministry of Interior, but to the Greek police on the “state of tolerance” status. Τhat is, not residence permit. Αnd no one except the police will be able to define their future.”
For these reasons, the solidarity movement should stay alert on the issue!
